Pesticida est biocidae genus, quod ad ullam pestem trahendam, illicendam, et tum destruendam designatur.[1] Usitatissimus pesticidarum usus est plantas protegere a rebus laedentibus sicut plantis inutilibus, fungis, vel insectis. Hic pesticidarum usus tam quotidianus est verbum pesticida saepe haberi synonymum locutionis merx quae plantas protegit, quamquam revera verbum latius est, quia pesticidae etiam ad proposita non agriculturalia adhibentur. Verbum pesticida omnes comprehendit notiones sequentes: herbicida, insecticida, ordinatorem incrementi insectorum, nematicida, isoptericida, molluscicida, piscicida, avicida, rodenticida, bactericida, repellens insectorum, repellens animalium, antimicrobiale, fungicida, disinfectans, et salubrifactor?.[2]

Pesticida generatim est chemicum vel agens biologicus (sicut virus, bacterium, antimicrobiale, vel disinfectans) qui pestes deterret, debilitat, interficit, vel aliter dehortatur. Inter vexatores petitos sunt insecta, pathogena plantarum, planta inutiles, mollusca, aves, mammalia, pisces, nematoda, et microbia quae bona destruunt, molestiam hominibus aspergunt, vel morbos spargunt, vel ipsa sunt vectores morborum. Quamquam omnibus pesticidis sunt beneficia, nonnullis sunt impedimenta, sicut hominibus et aliis speciebus toxicitas futura. Secundum Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, novem ex duodecim chemicis organicis periculosissimis et pertinacissimis sunt pesticidae organochlorinaceae.[3][4]
