Limnologia (Graece λίμνη 'lacus' + λόγος 'studium') est investigatio mediterraneorum oecosystematum aquaticorum,[1] quae biologicas, chemicas, physicas, geologicasque aquarum mediterranearum proprietates et rationes (aquarum fluentium et stantium, dulcium et salsarum, naturalium et ab hominibus factarum) tractat, plerumque studia lacuum, receptaculorum, stagnorum, fluminum, fontium, rivorum, locorum uliginosorum, atque adeo aquarum subterranearum faciens.[2] Limnologia terrestris, recentior limnologiae subdisciplina, haec oecosystemata investigat, administrat, et conservare ex animo holistico conatur, per coniunctiones inter oecosystemata et eorum pelves exsiccationis plane inspiciendas. Limnologia globalis, alia limnologiae subdisciplina, quae mediterraneas aquas globales sub tutela scientiae systematis telluris investigat, nuperrime creata est.[3] Quae subdisciplina rationes naturales in aquis mediterraneis maius investigat, sicut partes quas mediterranea oecosystemata aquatica in biogeochemicis telluris circulis agunt.[4][5][6][7][8]

Limnologia cum oecologia aquatica et hydrobiologia arte coniungitur, disciplinis quae organismos aquaticos eorumque interactiones cum circumiectis abioticis tractant. Limnologia magnopere cum disciplinis aquae dulcis (exempli gratia biologia aquae dulcis) congruit, sed etiam mediterraneos lacus salsos investigat.

Notio limnologiae a Francisco Alphonso Forel (1841–1912) proposita est, qui hanc disciplinam per eius studia Lacus Lemanni constitutus est.
