As a reductio ad absurdum, if we are to display the flag of Belgium as representative of the Dutch language, shall we also display flags of Aruba, Belgium, European Union, Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, South American Community of Nations, and Suriname? Please do not take offense at the disinclusion of the flag of Belgium in Vicipaedia:Babel formulae, this has nothing to do with anyone's sentiments about Belgium, just the aptness of its flag in representing the Dutch language. I have made this point about French on Disputatio Vicipaediae:Babel formulae#Flags for French. You will see if you look, only the German flag represents de, the UK flag en, the French flag fr, etc. Right now Yiddish is the only language which really needs two flags. If you have an image which combines several flags into one flag (like ) - and if it is available on Commons - we could use it. The point is, that we need one image to represent a language. --Rolandus 18:17, 7 Aprilis 2007 (UTC)

I think that's another thing. Here we want a symbol for the language, like "de" for German, which is spoken in Germany (de), Austria (at) and Switzerland (ch). Moreover: The Latin name for this language is Lingua Batava, which might tell us something. ;-) --Rolandus 19:11, 7 Aprilis 2007 (UTC)

If I may join in ... I understand why SPQR doesn't like that. I feel that national flags don't represent languages, and I am uncomfortable that we are making them do so. Right now, Yiddish may be the only language that doesn't seem to fit the system at all, but (given several thousand languages and a couple of hundred national flags) there will certainly be others. If we want a symbol, it shouldn't really be a national flag. Maybe it should be a big two-letter abbreviation, as in the Babel templates. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 19:17, 7 Aprilis 2007 (UTC)

Again, the problem is there with flags like that, it just becomes a matter of how far you would like to press the point? As i said with French, 41 countries have it as a national language, so a French/Canadian flag leaves out 39. This leaves out the European Union, San Marino, Slovenia, Somalia, Ethiopia, Vatican City, Istria county of Croatia. leaves out Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, the European Union, Guinea Bissau, Chinese S.A.R. of Macau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe. leaves out Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg. I don't want to waste room on your talk page listing all the countries that leaves out. The most diplomatic approach seems to be as Andrew suggested, we go with the wiki language codes. I stress again, though, if you'd like to promote Belgium as a dutch speaking country, go to Lingua Batava and tell the world =]. What are your thoughts?--Ioshus ^(disp) 20:11, 7 Aprilis 2007 (UTC)
