Ab Linnaeo huic speciei attributus est "caulis rigens, pedalis, crassitie digiti, perennans, laevis, ramis annuis, erectis; folia oleracea, magna, cuneata, repanda, obtusa ... flores caerulei ... baccae magnitudine pomi, globosae, flavae, subsessiles."[1] Per Africam sub climate tropicali colitur, etiam in Brasilia, media America, insulis Caribaeis, Asia austro-orientali.
