Pandanus
Pandanus (nomen a Sydney Parkinson anno 1773 statutum, e verbo Malaico pandan derivatum[1]) est genus Monocotyledonum, quorum sunt circa sescentae species notae. Plantae magnitudine inter se variant a parvis fruticibus minus quam metrum altis, ad arbores mediae magnitudinis duo metra altas, saepe tegimine patulo et mediocriter crescentes. Truncus crassus est, patulis ramis, multis cicatricibus foliorum.[2]
Plantae dioecae sunt, quippe quarum flores mares et femini in plantis separatis gignantur. Flores mari arbori duo triave centimetra longi sunt, et quidem odori, albisque bracteis circumdati. Arbor feminea flores rotundos gignit, quorum fructus etiam bracteis circumdantur. Singuli fructus sunt drupae, quae magis aut minus in multiplicem coeunt fructum 10–20 centimetrorum, cui forma globosa et prismatica est ananasae similis, Color fructus maturescentis a viridi ad aurantiacum clarum vel rubrum commutari solet.
Fructus nonnullarum specierum edules sunt, quibus animalia vescuntur, sicut cancri, vespertiliones, elephanti, ratti, varani, sed fructus plurimarum specierum praecipue aqua disperguntur.
