Fagopyrum esculentum[1] est species plantarum florentium familiae Polygonaecearum, quae species propter semina edulia frumenti similia et segem tegentem colitur. Fagopyrum tataricum, cognata species similis, pro cibo in Asia colitur. Contra buckwheat, eius nomen Anglicum, Fagopyrum esculentum non est cognatum tritici (wheat), quia gramen non est. Potius, arte cum Rumice acetosa, Polygono, et Rheo taxinomice conectitur. Fagopyrum esculentum aliquando pseudocereal appellatur quia coquinarius eius seminum usus idem ac usus cerealium est, propter eius carbohydrata multiplicia.
