Carter natus est Novi Eboraci in urbe die 11 Decembris 1908, filius Elliott Carter, Sr., negotiatoris divitis, et Florentiae Chambers. Iuvenis musicae attentus, ab Carolo Ives compositore incluto (qui patri fidem de damno resarciendo interpositam vendebat) excitatus est. Quamqum apud Collegium Harvardianum in Linguam Anglicam praecipue incubuit, musicae quoque studuit, ibi et apud Scholam Musicam Longy Cantabrigiae. Apud universitatem, acroasibus professorum Gualterius Piston, Gustavus Holst, et aliorum professorum musicae facultatis adfuit. In Harvard Glee Club cecinit.

Gradu A.M. in musica anno 1932 accepto, Lutetiam (sicut multi Americani illius temporis) ivit ut Nadiae Boulanger discipulus fiat. Musicae cum ea studuit annis 19321935, et doctoratum in musica (D. Mus.) apud École Normale Lutetiae anno 1935 accepit. Eodem anno ad Civitates Foederatas redivit, ubi Ballet Caravan direxit.

Ab 1940 ad 1944 ipse musicam, physicam, mathematicam, et Graecam antiquam apud St. John's College Annapoli in Marylandia docuit. Die 6 Iulii 1939, Carter Helenam Frost-Jones duxit, et eis natus est unus filius, David Chambers Carter. Per secundum bellum mundanum, Carter in Office of War Information laboravit. Deinde docuit in Conservatorio Peabody (19461948), Universitate Columbiana, Collegio Reginae (19551956), Universitate Yalensi (19601962), Universitate Cornell (a 1967) et Schola Juilliard (a 1972). Anno 1967 in Americanam Artium Litterarumque Academiam receptus est. Anno 1985 Insigne Artium Nationale atque bis Praemium Pulitzeranum accepit.
