Physeter est genus odontocetorum cui est una species viva, Physeter macrocephalus.[2] Fossilia duarum specierum agnoscuntur quae in eodem genere ponuntur: Physeter antiquus (5.3 – 2.6 mya) ex Pliocaeno Franciae,[3] et Physeter vetus (2.6 mya – 12 ka) ex Quaternario Georgiae.[4]
