Tiro breviter in classe Regia Britannica militavit, e qua rapidius recedit, sed iam in expeditione Arctica ad vestigia Ioannis Franklin reperienda participaverat. Geographus Londinii apud Tabularium Indicum(en) ab anno fere 1854 usque in 1877 operam dedit. Eisdem annis secretarius, deinde praeses, meruit Regiae Societatis Geographicae et Societatis Hakluyt. Annis 1876 et 1877 iuxta incursionem Britannicam in Aethiopiam geographus meruit. Expeditiones ipse suscepit in regionem Arcticam et in Peruviam: hic plantas Cinchonae pubescentis et C. calisayae collegit et in Indiam transtulit, ubi hae species usque hodie florent et quininam praebent. Expeditionem Antarcticam Britannicam, annis 1901–1904 gestam, sub aegide societatis geographicae fovit.
