Gymnotus, tropicus familiae Gymnotidarum piscis, est unus ex multiplicissimis gymnotiformibus in Amazonia gregibus inventis. Aliquae species intra folia reliqua radicesque implicatas prope ripas fluminum, aliquae in planitiebus inundatis intra circumplicatas pratorum innantium radices habitant. Nonnullae species in ambabus habitationibus vivere possunt.
Gymnotus est praedator nocturnus, qui insectis, crustaceis, et aliis piscibus vescitur. Tenues gignunt campos electricos, ad inveniendas res adhibitos, et ad communicandos nuntios, dum mares feminas tritis "carminibus" electricis petunt.
