Cento Vergilianus de laudibus Christi
Cento Vergilianus de laudibus Christi est carmen Latinum a Faltonia Betitia Proba circa annum 352 compositum, postquam auctor ad Christianismum conversa est. Cento hic significat "genus carminis ex variis alieni operis hinc inde decerptis versibus, et ad alia significanda traductis consarcinatum".[1] In hoc centone versibus ex operibus Vergilii extractis fabulae Veteris et Novi Testamenti Bibliorum Christianorum narrantur. Maior pars operis vitam Iesu Christi tractat.
Cur Proba hoc poëma scripsit non definite scitur, sed variae coniecturae factae sunt. Utique Cento late pervulgatus, denique in scholis, saepe cum Augustini libro De doctrina Christiana, ad instituta Christiana docenda adhibitum est. Eruditi autem non omnes magno eum aestimabant. Creditur Hieronymum Probam ac Centonem reprehendisse, et in decreto Gelasio I papae ascripto, poëma contemptum et "conpaginatum apocryphum" appellatum est. Nihilominus, Isidorus, Petrarca, Boccacius Probam approbaverunt et multi ingenium eius laudaverunt. Saeculis XIX et XX Cento deterior habitum est, sed philiologi recentes eum maioris aestimant.
