Braarudosphaerae testam (sceletum nempe externum) e duodecim squamis pentagonalibus (quae ergo pentalithi dicuntur) calcareis constitutam habent, quae squamae simul dispositae dodecahedron regulare efformant. Nomen huius generis Trygve Braarud, botanistam Norvegicum commemorat,[1] species autem hodiernae intra hoc duae sunt, B. bigelowii (Gran & Braarud) Deflandre et B. magnei Lefort. Ambae species marinae et plancticae sunt.[2]

Braarudosphaera bigelowii celeberrima est primo propter longaevitatem suam, cum fossilia huius speciei in petris Cretaceis (ante circiter 100 000 000 annorum formatis) inventae sint, e quo constat hanc speciem exstinctionem ad terminum Cretacei Palaeogenique superfuisse;[3] secundo autem propter organellum apud nulla alia Eukaryota inventum, nitroplastum scilicet, cuius gratia haec alga nitrogenium atmosphaericum assimilare potest.[2][4]
