Ioannes Ashbery, vulgo plene John Lawrence Ashbery (Roffae civitatis Novi Eboraci natus die 28 Iulii 1927; mortuus 3 Septembris 2017 in urbe Hudson eiusdem civitatis) fuit poeta Americanus. Qui plus quam viginti libros poematum protulit et paene omne maius Americanum poesis arbitrium abstulit, inter quae Praemium Pulitzeranum anno 1976 pro congerie Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror ('Effigies sui ipsius in speculo convexo') et anno 2011 Praemium Nationale Librorum. Opus Ashberianum, ob obscuritatem involutasque postmodernismi rationes celebre, iam controversum est. Ashbery dixit se desiderare suum opus intellegi a tot lectoribus quot fieri possunt, et sermo privatus secum habitus non esse.[1] Eodem tempore, ipse olim iocatus est nonnullos criticos eum iam putare "surrealistam temerarium et domesticum, cuius poesis etiam praecepta et logicam surrealismi provocat."[2][3] "Nemo est quin tam grandis in poesi Americana per recentissimos annos quinquaginta quam Ioannes Ashbery videatur,"[4] ait Langdon Hammer, dux partis Anglicae Universitatis Yalensis, anno 2008: "Nemini poetae Americano fuit vocabularium maius, diversius, non Whitman, non Pound."[5][6] Stephanus Burt, poeta et professor Anglicae in Universitate Harvardiana, Ashbery cum T. S. Eliot comparavit, Ashbery dicens "ultimam personam quem dimidium poetarum linguae Anglicae vivi putaverunt magnum exemplar, et aliud dimidium hominem qui intellegi non potest."[7][8]
