On railways and Roman roads

Greetings, UV. It seemed a good idea to mention this to you because you are much better at adapting templates than I am, but you may well be too busy, I realise. We use the route diagram system, most commonly used for railways on other Wikipedias, for Roman roads. Which is OK, and it falls within the normal purposes of the system, which includes "trails". There is a problem (I have only just noticed) on mobile view: the diagram is wrongly spaced. Each horizontal line of diagram+text is rendered well, but is separated by a wide space from the next. See for example Iter per Larium lacum on normal view and mobile view.

Evidently this must be corrected by an adjustment to Formula:BS-table or one of the related templates, so I know I'll have to compare the histories of our templates with the histories of the English or German templates. For examples over there, see en:Metropolitan line and de:Metropolitan Line on mobile view: on my mobile screen the English joins up more perfectly than the German, but both are quite acceptable.

Just to continue the story, I found that the BS template family on Hungarian wiki (perhaps uniquely) has perfect rendering on mobile view and does not use Lua. So I am in the process of copying and adapting the Hungarian templates to substitute, where necessary, for our own. Initial tests are positive. We're getting there (famously, this was the not-very-confident motto of British Rail). If you happen to look in for a moment, wish me luck!

Once I know that we've got there, we could use these templates for canals and railway lines -- copying the details from other wikis -- as well as for our own Roman roads. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 09:34, 22 Novembris 2018 (UTC)
