Cur telephonum, -i, non telephona, -ae? Verbum Graecum phonē est femininum? IacobusAmor 20:14, 8 Martii 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... let's have a look at everything I can tell gender from: ast:Teléfonu, el:Τηλέφωνο, en:Telephone, eo:Telefono, es:Teléfono, eu:Telefono, fr:Téléphone, gl:Teléfono, hu:Távbeszélő, it:Telefono, pt:Telefone, ru:Телефон, tl:Telepono.
So it seems like everyone (including the greeks themselves!!!) thought that this word should be masculine. Neuter => Masculine from Latin => Romance languages, so certainly we are looking at either telephonus, or telephonum, and from the two, I prefer the neuter.--Ioshus (disp) 20:49, 8 Martii 2007 (UTC)Reply
No, the Greek is neuter (the modern -ο continues ancient -ον, while the masculine still has -ος). As for the gender of phone, it's immaterial—it's not a far-sound, the way antiphona is a responding sound; it's a far-sound-making-machine (this is occasionally underscored by an alternate form telephonium.) —Mucius Tever 02:23, 9 Martii 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that makes more sense. And mirrors the Latin usage, coincidentally.--Ioshus (disp) 02:35, 9 Martii 2007 (UTC)Reply
That decides it then :

1) Scriptum est "numerum telephonicum suo telephono indare debet". Nonne rectius dicitur "numerus telephonicus suo telephono inserendus est"?

2) Scriptum est "telephona gestabilia, quo ubicumque loqui possunt." Nonne rectius dicitur "telephona gestabilia, quibus ubicumque loqui potes/possumus."? Flo.bayer (disputatio) 21:24, 13 Ianuarii 2020 (UTC)Reply

Revertere ad "Telephonum".
