Utrumque corpus mammillare est pars diencephali, in medio basis cerebri visibile. Infundibulum anterius, posterius pons trunci cerebri iacent. Utroque corpori mammillari duo nuclei insunt: maior eminentiam notabiliorem mammillosam perficiens nucleus medialis atque minor nucleus lateralis.

Nucleus tuberomammillaris non est pars corporis mammillaris sed hypothalami.

Afferentes tractus nervales per fornices ab utroque hippocampo influunt. Insuper alia afferentia de origine nucleorum tegmentalium (Gudden) adsunt. Efferentia ad nucleos anteriores thalami (tractus mammillothalamicus)[3] et nucleos tegmentales (tractus mammillotegmentalis) effluunt.

Functione memoriae causa detrimentum corporum mammillarium deminutionem memoriae, amnesiam, efficiant. Ob defectionem thiamini (vitamini B1) fibrae nervales degenerant[5]. Nomen morbi cum memoriae deminutione, amnesia anterograda et retrograda, confabulationibus, apathia, penuria introspectionis vocatur syndroma Korsakov alcoholica.
