:A Roman Catholic priest once lent me a Roman Catholic book that insisted that the proper name of the church (in English) is "the Roman Catholic Church." Keeping the ''Romana'' there differentiates between the Roman church and the Holy Catholic Church (which, according to Anglicans, includes Anglicans and Lutherans and maybe others). Since it's not for us to decide these theological questions, all we should do is report them. The Vatican's website has an article that begins (boldface added): "DISCORSO DI SUA SANTITÀ PAOLO VI ALL'ARCIVESCOVO DI CANTERBURY / Mercoledì, 23 marzo 1966. . . . Lumine Christi affulgente singulare animadvertimus momentum huius congressionis, qua '''Ecclesia Catholica Romana''' atque Ecclesia Anglicana et Ecclesiae Communionis Anglicanae inter se quasi occurrunt. . . ." On the other hand, many Catholics prefer the phrase "Catholic" as the phrase "Roman Catholic" was invented by the Anglicans to imply that the Catholic Church is the catholic church for Italy, and the Anglican church was the catholic church for England. Most official church documents (like the Catechism of the Catholic Church) use the term Catholic, rather then Roman Catholic.
