Pulvis pyrius vel pulvis incendiarius vel pulvis tormentarius vel pulvis bombardicus est mixtura trium chemicorum, videlicet carbonis, sulfuris, et salis petrae, quae summa cum rapiditate flagrat, magnum gasium volumen efficiens. Haec gasia tam rapide expandunt ut, cum confiniuntur, eruptionem violentem creent. Adhibebatur in sclopetis (quapropter Anglice gunpowder, scilicet 'pulvis sclopeti' dicitur) ubi, eruptione temperata, gasia pulveris flagrantis glandem plumbeam e tubo propellunt.
