Disputatio Vicipaediae:Paginae quas omnibus Wikipediis contineri oportet/Expansio

Here is a first cut at the expanded list. I've included Wikidata links for each page; if we have a page in Latin, that's linked as well, and otherwise I've given links to a couple of other languages' versions. Over the next day or so I'll put in the rest of the sub-pages. I'll probably drop some of the extra language links to make the page a bit smaller. I will then start thinking about a report with sizes and so on, similar to the table I've done for the 1000-page list (but without the comparison to the average size among other WPs, because size info isn't available in Meta for this group). Further refinements include a formula similar to our [[Formula:1000 paginae]], maybe even a cute logo. A. Mahoney (disputatio) 18:11, 29 Aprilis 2014 (UTC)Reply

Tantalising. I'd love to look at these expansio pages, but my computer (only 2 months old, with reasonable memory) can't open them. (I have trouble also with the Meta 10,000 page lists, but not as bad as this.) The "Homines" subpage has been loading for 8 minutes with nothing visible as yet ... I know; I'm having similar problems. I think it's because there are so many links; that the columns syntax isn't right yet is an additional problem, but easier to fix! Note that because they're transcluded, you do already see all the contents of "Homines" and "Historia" when you bring up the main page (the one of which this is the Disputatio page). The other sub-pages don't exist yet -- I've pulled the info from Meta but haven't formatted and translated them into here yet; that's the plan for tomorrow. A. Fixing the column syntax has made a large difference, in fact -- try again now. More sub-pages coming! A. Mahoney (disputatio) 19:24, 29 Aprilis 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank goodness, yes. Immensely better. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 19:43, 29 Aprilis 2014 (UTC)Reply

Habemus tabulam

Tabula nunc est plena. Si pagina apud nos exstat, nomen invenies; si talem paginam non habemus, nomina paginarum aliarum linguarum in pagina misi. Cum novam paginam creas, nomen alienum tollens, nostrum insere! A. Mahoney (disputatio) 13:14, 1 Maii 2014 (UTC)Reply

May figures are out

We're still 46th, but with positive growth; we lost a little when the list was revised (because one of the pages removed was one of our longer ones) but gained it back with new pages. Progress! I'll run the report over the weekend when I'm on campus for commencement activities. A. Mahoney (disputatio) 19:27, 16 Maii 2014 (UTC)Reply

Logo?

It would be straightforward to put a marker on all the pages on this list like the logo on the 1000 Paginae; I did that with a formula, {{1000 paginae}}, which also adds the pages to the relevant (hidden) category. Would that be useful or desirable here? A. Mahoney (disputatio) 19:29, 16 Maii 2014 (UTC)Reply

It certainly would! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 20:04, 16 Maii 2014 (UTC)Reply
We now have a formula, {{Myrias}}, with a parameter to put the pages into sub-categories, since I figured putting all 10,000 into one category would be unwieldy. I am working on adding the formula to the existing pages, slowly. I used an existing symbol from Commons for a logo; anyone who's good at graphic design (which I'm certainly not) should feel free to create a better one! A. Can you (with the help of a script/program/bot/etc.) from time to time check whether this template has been added to other pages in error? Today, I came across the article Procopius Rasus. The author added the {{Myrias|Homines}} template to it but this article is not linked from the Expansio pages. Probably the template should be removed from this article? In the meanwhile, enjoy your holidays! Greetings, --UV (disputatio) 19:43, 26 Maii 2014 (UTC)Reply
I came across that page again today. I'm sure you're right, UV, so I took the formula out. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 12:24, 12 Iunii 2014 (UTC)Reply
(Back from vacation and back on line!) I should be able to work up something to check the template against the list -- for that matter, the same can be done for the classic 1000 Paginae list. Will put on my to-do list for the next couple of weeks, as an interesting diversion. A. Mahoney (disputatio) 17:49, 12 Iunii 2014 (UTC)Reply

Additions

Over at meta I have made some additions under people and geography. Don't yet know if anyone will dispute them. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 15:59, 18 Maii 2014 (UTC)Reply

Adding Cicero is surely an excellent idea! I'm adding support over at Meta now. You may get flamed for updating the list without first getting consensus on the talk pages, though people don't seem quite as touchy about this list as about the 1,000 Pages. There's a "quota" page, m:List of articles every Wikipedia should have/Expanded/Quotas, that keeps track of how many pages are desired in each category. Next step is to get them into this list, which I'm not updating automatically (too messy); I'd wait a bit in case anyone summarily reverts your changes in Meta, though. A. Mahoney (disputatio) 16:56, 18 Maii 2014 (UTC)Reply
No flames -- the atmosphere there seems friendly. No one has objected to my changes. But I wasn't aware of the quota page -- thanks.
I was thinking of saying over there that there's no good reason to include every constellation. It's not as if the same constellations are recognised in every culture, and as far as current astronomy is concerned they are just names for areas of the star-map. I am likewise doubtful whether every individual trans-uranium element deserves to be in the 10,000. Does anyone else have any comment on this? Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 08:42, 27 Maii 2014 (UTC)Reply
There does seem to be a tension between completeness in certain fields and importance of individual items. For instance, I just added Palestine, which wasn't in there perhaps because it's not a fully recognized sovereign state, but I think most people would agree that it's more important than seaborgium or the constellation Eridanus. It looks like 23 of the 88 modern constellations are already not included, though. Lesgles (disputatio) 23:12, 27 Maii 2014 (UTC)Reply

I've updated the Anthropologia part, which has been significantly changed at Meta. There are changes to Homines as well but I haven't got them in here yet. The list at Meta is somewhat a lot more volatile than the 1000-page list; anyone who wants to work on raising our score on this set of pages might want to keep an eye on changes over there and help propagate them to our copy of the list (this page and its sub-pages). I have completed the routine discussed above to check that all pages on the list have the new Myrias template, and all pages not on the list don't have it; that takes about 20 minutes to run, so can be done occasionally to keep things in order. I'm running the statistics/epitome-table report now, too, just to see where we are. A. Mahoney (disputatio) 20:19, 11 Iulii 2014 (UTC)Reply
