Actually, Montréal is the French way of writing it - with the accent. [Scripsit 70.50.165.172 hora 08:37, 3 Iunii 2006.]

Who got the idea of calling Montreal 'Mons Regius' in latin? [Scripsit 216.252.80.92 hora 01:57, 17 Ianuarii 2008‎.]
The name means Mount Royal, right? Named after the mountain overlooking the city. Mons Regius is merely a literal translation, although I don't know the original source for it. THe Vatican name for the archdiocis apparently uses Marianopolis, but several of the fontes nominum locorum cite "Mons Regius" as well as "Mons Regalis" as translations for similarly named European cities in Germany, Italy and France..--Rafaelgarcia 02:27, 17 Ianuarii 2008 (UTC)Reply
"Marianopolis" is the fancy translation of the old name of the city, Ville Marie; the Vatican doesn't update its Latinisations to take account of changes in the vulgar tongue, so Marianopolis it remains. But "Mons Regius" typically appears on crests, mottoes, etc. in the city today, and has done since at least the early 19th century. 74.127.242.146 18:39, 30 Ianuarii 2008 (UTC)Reply

And we now know that the official name of the university is Universitas Montis Regii. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 14:47, 3 Aprilis 2010 (UTC)Reply
My diploma from McGill describes the university as ad Montem Regium in Canada.
Thanks, that's useful to know. So is the complete phrase "Universitas McGill ad Montem Regium in Canada"? Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 17:15, 26 Martii 2013 (UTC)Reply

Anyone know how to say "Montréalais"/"Montrealer" in Latin? Thanks :) Mattie 00:45, 21 Augusti 2010 (UTC)Reply

You can say "Marianopolitanus", that is the term used by the Vatican. --Cassius Granatensis (disputatio) 18:17, 9 Augusti 2012 (UTC)Reply
