According to the English page (with sources cited) this name is really borrowed from French mont clair, and, sure enough, there is a view of the place from the top of a nearby forested hill. - But no need for all this. I have found a biography in a recent thesis in Latin by a Kentucky student of Terence Tunberg. She had graduated at Montclair, or, as she puts it, "ornata Baccalaurea duplici Linguae Latinae et Studiorum Classicorum in universitate studiorum Montis Clari (vulgo Montclair), quae sita est in civitate Nova Caesarea".
