  • Please do not simply blank a page when - in fact - you want to rename it.
  • Please do not copy a page when - in fact - you want to rename it.

If you are asking, Why not rename or move a page by simple copy/paste?, see the explanation below.

How to move a page recensere

If you want to rename a page "A" to "B", you can "move" the page:

  • Log in. (If you do not already have an account, see #New users below.)
  • Go to page "A" and click on "movere" (one of the buttons on top of a page). If you do not see the "movere" link, click on the down arrow ( ) near the top of the page to reveal the "movere" link. (If you still do not see the "movere" tab, see #New users below.)
  • Then you will be asked for the new title for the content (here "B") and you need to provide a reason for the movement.

Moving will do the following:

  1. It creates a page "B" with the content of "A", including its entire page history (all previous edits and their respective authors)
  2. It creates a new page at "A" with just the content "#REDIRECT [[B]]"
  3. If there exists a talk page of "A" it moves the content to the talk page of "B" and leaves a redirect on the talk page of "A".

A moved page can be moved again, so moving is – technically – not a dangerous action. However, if you think the community will not like the new title, it is a good idea to ask before moving the page. A good place to do so is the talk page of page "A". If you think the move is ok … just do it.

Why not rename or move a page by simple copy/paste? recensere

It is usually not a good idea to do this manually (to create a new page "B" and to copy the content from "A" to "B"): That way, the page history (the previous edits and their respective authors) remains at "A", and people looking at "B" will not see the names of the authors that contributed to the content. Your move would most probably constitute a violation of the GFDL, which requires attribution to authors.

What if the target page already has content? recensere

If the page "B" already exists (and is not just a redirect with only one single revision in its revision history), moving a page to "B" is not possible before page "B" is itself moved or deleted. If you feel that the current contents of "B" should be deleted and if you are not an administrator yourself, you will need to ask an administrator to delete "B". In order to do so, place {{movenda|B}} on page "A" and explain your reasons on the talk page of page "A".

In this case as well, do not just move the page contents by simple copy/paste. See the reasons given above.

Needed rights for moving a page recensere

Any logged-in user can move pages once four days have elapsed since registration, this needs no administration rights.

Exception: See What if the target page already has content? above.

New users recensere

If you do not already have an account, please register: Vicipaedia:Invitatio!

In order to prevent vandalism, newly registered users cannot move pages unless four days have elapsed since registration (One more reason to register an account soon!) But even if you just newly registered, we value your contributions. You can edit Vicipaedia immediately. Regarding page moves, until the four days have elapsed, you will need to ask some other user to do the move for you. In order to do so, place {{movenda|B}} on page "A" and explain your reasons on the talk page of page "A".

In this case as well, do not just move the page contents by simple copy/paste. See the reasons given above.
