:It may well be correct. I did a quick-and-dirty search through the [http://www.perseus.tufts.edu Perseus] morphology library; there are 30,099 nouns of which 11,663 end in -us in the nominative singular. Since that's over 1/3, and there are more than two other categories (there are -a, -um, -es, for example), the -us nouns do seem to be the largest group. Students ''hate'' the fact that they can be like ''lupus, -i'' or like ''corpus, -oris'' or like ''casus, -us''! (Props to the Perseids for making their stuff available for download.)
