Dominicus Theotocopulus (Graece Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος; natus anno 1541, mortuus die 7 Aprilis 1614), saepius El Greco[2] "Graecus" appellatus, fuit pictor, sculptor, atque architectus Renascentiae, qui ex Graecia ortus Hispaniam habitabat.

Natus est in Creta, quae illo tempore erat pars Rei publicae Venetae et magnus locus artis artis post-Byzantini. Quam artem perdidiscens magister factus est, antequam annos 26 natus Venetiam iit, viam aliorum artificum Graecorum sequens. Anno 1570 Romam migravit, ubi officinam aperuit et seriem operum perfecit. In Italia suum pingendi modum partibus Mannerismi et renascentiae Veneticae locupletavit. Anno 1577 Toletum migravit, ubi usque ad mortem habitavit et laboravit. In Hispania plura magna mandata accepit et opera clarissima pinxit.

Pictura eius dramatica et expressiva, a pluribus contemporaneis contempta, saeculo XX maiorem favorem accepit. Nunc praecursor et expressionismi et cubismi habetur, et ingenium eius nonnullos scriptores, ut Rainerium Maria Rilke et Nicolaum Cazantzacen movit. A scriptoribus recentibus artifex singularis, ad nullam scholae vulgarem pertinens, ducitur. Tabulae eius saepe figuras tortuosas et longas monstrant, prodigiosis coloribus pictas; sic pictor mores orientales occidentalesque coniunxit.
