Descriptio
English: Engraving of Karel van Mander, author of the book "Schilder-boeck", from the book itself. Under the portrait is the year "Ao 1604" and the initials of the painter Hendrik Goltzius "HG pinxit" and the note "J. Saenredam fecit" for the engraver. Surrounding the portrait is van Mander's motto "Mensch soeckt veel, doch een is noodich", meaning "Man searches for many, though (only) one is needed". Underneath the portrait (not shown) are the additional words: "Caerle ver mander van Molebeke in Vlaender, Schilder AETAT. 56.", meaning he was 56 at the time the painting was made. Top left and right: two swans crowned and gorged but not chained.
