The European discovery of Vanuatu (New Hebrides)
recensereRe: "Harum insularum detector Europaeus primus annis 1595 - 1599 Vincentius Bune (Vice Bune) fuit, navigator Dalmaticus ex Ragusa (Dubrovnik)." ← What's the source of this statement? Peter H. Buck's book Exploreres of the Pacific (Honolulu: Bernice P. Bishop Museum special publication 43, 1953) doesn't mention Bune, and it implies (p. 9) that the first Europeans to sight Vanuatu were on an expedition led by Pedro Fernandez de Quiros, and that this expedition "discovered" the New Hebrides in 1606, and, further, that on 3 May 1606 Quiros "discovered" an island he called Australia del Espíritu Santo—a name that, reduced to Espiritu Santo, has stuck to the present day. - And for what it's worth: today's issue of The Independent features a story about Vanuatuans who are doing an ethnographical study of England; the article says: "The first island in the Vanuatu group discovered by Europeans was Espiritu Santo in 1606 by the Portuguese explorer Pedro Fernandez De Quiros." - A curious case. See also Disputatio:Vincentius Bune. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 19:55, 20 Septembris 2007 (UTC)
- There is a wealth of information regarding Quiros' voyage to and discovery of Vanuatu, see English WP entry and links. Similarly, Mendana's voyage to the Solomons. These references to Bune thoughout the WP project all source each other as authorities!--Nickm57 00:29, 12 Decembris 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, thanks for the reminder, I've been meaning to get back to the Bune case. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 10:05, 12 Decembris 2007 (UTC)

recensereI removed the "francophony" and "anglophony" categories pro tem because we haven't applied them elsewhere in the world. Not sure if we need them. Note the Linguarum officialium catalogus: this may cover the need. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 10:31, 4 Iunii 2010 (UTC)
