recensereFortasse loci nomen rectius sit Promontorium Occidentale. Nobis dicit Ainsworth hoc verbum geographicum point Latine esse promontorium vel terrae lingua. Scripsit Daniel Defoe, in libro A Tour thro' the Whole Island of Great Britain (1724–1727): "The east point, or Dingsby-Head, he calls Virvedrum Promontorium. The west point, or Farro-head, he calls Saruedrum Promontorium. IacobusAmor 23:59, 24 Augusti 2007 (UTC)
- Could very well be Promontorium is better. I don't have a personal feeling about it. Magister Dalby, was denkst du darüber? LionhardusCiampa 00:55, 25 Augusti 2007 (UTC)
--Harrissimo 16:06, 26 Augusti 2007 (UTC)
- Why me? Not much of a military type. OK, my view is that it all depends what "West Point" means in this case. And I don't know. en:West Point is uninformative. On my map I don't see any Promontorium. Is it the west angle of Highland County? Is it, maybe, not even Occidentale, but named after an 18th century farmer called West? - With respect to the mountains it does jut out into the river or rather it causes the river to flow in a bend. I think this jutting out is why the military base was first located there, in order to control the river. These facts do not tell us why it is called west point however or what precisely the meaning of west is.--Rafaelgarcia 13:15, 19 Novembris 2007 (UTC)
- It is also on the west side of the river.--Rafaelgarcia 15:42, 19 Novembris 2007 (UTC)
- You mean the Hudson? Not very close to it, according to my map. But maybe my map is wrong! You're right, en:wiki says it is on a "scenic overlook" above the Hudson. Maybe that's it. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 16:02, 19 Novembris 2007 (UTC)
- Yes it is on the left or western bank of the hudson river. On the opposite bank approximately a mile north is the village of cold spring harbor. see map--Rafaelgarcia 16:53, 19 Novembris 2007 (UTC)
- So what's the problem? A point is "a projecting usu. tapering piece of land or a sharp prominence" (Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary). IacobusAmor 17:12, 19 Novembris 2007 (UTC)
- I think the problem is just that the map Andrew used wasn't accurately showing that West Point is actually a point in that sense.--Rafaelgarcia 17:15, 19 Novembris 2007 (UTC)
- That is exactly it. Since en:wiki (when I consulted it) was not very clear where this place was, I think I found a different West Point elsewhere in New York State. This one is a promontory. No problem at all, therefore. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 18:07, 19 Novembris 2007 (UTC)
