Schola Latina

Wouldn't e. g. Schola Latina be a better title for this article? --Roland2 09:08, 6 Maii 2006 (UTC)Reply

I would say leave it as Lateinschule (as in the English article) and say something like (Latine schola Latina). Daniel ([[Usehttp://la.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Disputatio:Lateinschule&action=edit

Surely if these schools were actually called by any name at all in the middle ages, there was a Latin form of it. How could there not be? --Iustinus 23:54, 10 Septembris 2006 (UTC)Reply

In the past 5000 years or so

In the past 5000 years or so, languages and other subjects have been taught at millions of schools. None of the listed ones is remotely as famous in the Western Hemisphere as the Boston Latin School, which of course the article doesn't list, probably because it reflects the bias of the text in the English wiki : "A Lateinschule, that is 'latin school', was the grammar school of earlier times in Germany." The current German wiki says lateinschules were replaced by gymnasiums. (I'm using English words here for effect.) Lateinschule isn't a Latin word : the English translation is rightly not "Latin school," but something closer to "elementary school" or "grammar-school" or "primary school," and may include notions of "middle school," "high school," and other kinds of school. Delete the article, or drastically change its title (just plain Schola would do), and then change the thrust of its definition. IacobusAmor 14:51, 8 Martii 2007 (UTC)Reply

I do not understand why you have put a {{delenda}} into this page.

  • Lateinschule seems to be a special concept. At least in the German speaking countries. The English aequivalent seems to be latin school, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=latin+school&go=Go. If it is a general concept, we should add schools from other countries as well. It is clear that the article focuses on the situation in Europe at the moment.
  • The article lists 28 schools up to the 16th century, starting in the year 799. If the en:Boston Latin School, which was founded in 1635, is the most famous one in the Western Hemisphere, we should simply add it at position 29, together with 3 other schools which have been founded in the 17th century. ;-)
  • Yes, Lateinschule is not a German Latin (--Alex1011 09:55, 10 Martii 2007 (UTC)) word. What shall we do? Delete the article?Reply
  • If the article does not cover all aspects, we should extend, not delete it.

Re: "If the article does not cover all aspects, we should extend, not delete it." On the contrary, this article should become a subarticle under the lemma Schola, just as Schola Romana is ; and the Boston Latin School, not being a Lateinschule according to the definitions in en: & de:, should be put in a different subsection of Schola. What en: & de: are saying is that Lateinschule is a historical—i.e., obsolete (there aren't any more of them; they became something else)—term for certain schools in the German-speaking world. ¶ Alternatively, the article might stand alone if it had its own Latin title. (Lateinschule isn't a Latin word.) Iustinus suggested (above) that since the concept was medieval, there must have been a Latin term for it, and that's the term that should head the article or subarticle. With this article? Shall I delete it, shall we contribute it? (I'm just cleaning up Categoria:Deletiones propositae).--Ioshus (disp) 14:38, 3 Aprilis 2007 (UTC)Reply

Now that Irenaeus has rectified its grammatical & stylistic obtuseness and it begins "Lateinschule quasi schola latinitatis vox Germanica est . . . ," maybe it could be kept but rejiggered to begin something like "Schola Latinitatis (Theodisce: Lateinschule). . . ."
