On another note: in none of the Latin styles we've cited so far is Ireland mentioned by name. Currently, in the respective articles, we seem to be claiming that the name Hibernia only applies to Ancient Ireland, and the modern country is Irlandia. I have no doubt I could find attestations of Irlandia, but is that really the official name? Honestly I kind of doubt it. (Replies should probably go to Disputatio:Irlandia --Iustinus 14:57, 12 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)

Up to the early 20th century, when British kings ruled all of Ireland, they called it "Hibernia" on their coins. I haven't seen "Irlandia" in Latin, though, as you say, no doubt examples could be found. Perhaps there isn't an "official" Latin name -- isn't it good that Vicipaedia seldom has to worry about such things?

I feel doubt about the etymology just added to the article. I thought the Latin was a version of a probably-native name, also recorded in Greek as Ierne. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 15:47, 12 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)

Indeed, and both of them are probably equivalent to Eire. I've seen them etymologized as from *Pivernia (*p > 0 in Celtic languages, of course, compare Irish orc "piglet", cognate to porcus), which would be from the same root as Greek πί(ϝ)ον "I drank" (Land of Drink? Certain stereotypes never change! Notice that one of the few sentences of Gaulish attested is likewise curmi da, meaining "Gimme a beer.") Then of course there's the persistant folk etymology that links Eire/Ireland to *Aryo-, making it "Land of the Aryans."

When you say "isn't it good that Vicipaedia seldom has to worry about such things?", do you mean it's good that we seldom have to worry about what an official Latin name is, or that we seldom have to worry about there not being one? ;) --Iustinus 16:26, 12 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)

• apoligising for my lack of latin, my recollections of Celtic mythology is thar both the roots of Éire and Ireland are based on two Celtic Gods (one feminine and another masculine)

I think Hibernia is a better latin word (granted my latin is fairly rusty) for Ireland as it was most prevelant, and in irish schools we are taught that as the latin word for the country
