Andrew, I think this page should be moved to Johannes... If an author wrote his name a certain way we should respect that. We can make a small template that explains the naming ratio. Maybe something like:

Titulus huius paginae VP:TNP violat, quod haec forma nominis attestatur, vel auctor ipse eodem modo nomen solebat scripsere."

What do you think?--Ioshus (disp) 21:32, 16 Decembris 2006 (UTC)Reply

As you may have seen, that's where I put it originally! I then moved it to Iohannes ... because it struck me that in our Vicipaedia Latin standard J is not used. Then User:Massimo Macconi moved it to Ioannes ... on the grounds that "Latine Ioannes non IoHannes".
I'm not happy with Ioannes, which, whatever Massimo says, is not the only Latin spelling, and is not the form used by the man himself. I prefer the h to be in there. As for the choice between J and I, that's a different matter because it depends how you transliterate medieval manuscripts: there is generally agreed to be a single Latin letter that may be written I or J.
Finally I prefer Iohannes, and, if we choose that, I think there's no need for a note in the article about the way he spelt his name. But we do need articles (some already exist) about the variant spellings of "Christian names", with redirect pages to assist those who type in Johannes or Jacobus and expect to find something. PS: I like your proposed template. I'm sure it will have plenty of uses! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 17:20, 17 Decembris 2006 (UTC)Reply

Agreed on all points. --Iustinus 03:03, 19 Decembris 2006 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps we should write up a page on the name itself, with a discussion of Ioannes vs. Iohannes: the idea that the -h- is non-Latin has come up before, and when it happens again, it would be nice to have a page to direct people to --Iustinus 03:05, 19 Decembris 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's all good, Massimo. I'm just a little sensitive to this issue, having chosen a non standard translation of Giosuè for my latin name. =] --Ioshus (disp) 17:57, 17 Decembris 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it's fine! We will get these names into shape, I know we will. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 18:01, 17 Decembris 2006 (UTC)Reply
