How and why was it decided to name the Tolkienian elves as Dryades? They are nothing close to dryads or "tree nymphs". It should be renamed to Quendi or something more appropriate. -- [Anon]
- You'll have to ask the Latin translator of "The Hobbit" that question: see the footnote. Vicipaedia normally accepts reliably published translations. But it's quite appropriate to add a paragraph about the name, saying that this translation is misleading because of what "Dryades" really means (with citations please) so feel free to go ahead and do that. - I think that renaming this article to Quendi and then add a footnote or paragraph that the translator of Hobbitus Ille named them as Dryades would do justice to the legendarium name, and to them not being tree nymphd.
- Dryades is a wholly unfit name, and taking "Hobbitus Ille" as a precedent unwise, given the horrid Latinity. Grimm has "Alfus" for elf in more than one publication, I suggest we follow his more authoritative precedent.
- It's fine to do that, if the published translation made a choice that is clearly wrong as against Tolkien's own knowledge and ours. Once we've decided, our choice of term and the other options have to be explained clearly in the article. I added the {{ScDub}} template because the current first sentence is nonsense. - To be clear, the subject of "... est nomen ..." has to be a single word either singular or plural: currently we have two in bold face, one singular, one plural, plus three more, unexplained, in a parenthesis.
