Disputatio:Cuniculus Hvalfjordensis

Latest comment: abhinc 16 annos by Andrew Dalby

Hm, can anyone find anything wrong with that title? I'm not entirely sure about it. --BiT 00:43, 13 Iulii 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cuniculus Hualfiordiensis I think would be better, do you have an attestation?--Rafaelgarcia 01:12, 13 Iulii 2008 (UTC)Reply
Because Hvalfjord ("Ballaenarum sinus") is a place in Island, the local name should be followed. I find "Hvalfjordensis" unobjectionable – unless a source can be cited for "Hualfiordiensis" . --Neander 02:49, 13 Iulii 2008 (UTC)Reply
At first glance I took it to be "the Hvalfjord rabbit". But maybe there are no rabbits in Iceland, or, at least, no notable rabbits ... I think the title works OK. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 08:52, 13 Iulii 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ha! Andrew, you're not the only one. IacobusAmor 11:25, 13 Iulii 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well I didn't find any better word for "tunnel". The name of the article is not attested, I simply made it from Hvalfjordus which is my own latinization of Hvalfjörður. Should Hvalfjörður be named "Ballaenarum sinus"? Should Reykjavík then also be called "Fumorum sinus"? I would personally prefer Hvalfjordus (or a better translation) to a direct Translations (even though Tabanorum lacus is a calque translation of Mývatn).. --BiT 22:51, 15 Iulii 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, usor Thesaurus has just created an article about Boulder (a city in Colorado), which he calls Petra. IacobusAmor 23:19, 15 Iulii 2008 (UTC)Reply
... and not too long ago, the town Cork was naively latinised as Suber! BiT, it wasn't my purpose to suggest a Latin name for Hvalfjörður. My translation was for the entertainment of the audience. My fault, forgot the smiley. :-) --Neander 01:45, 16 Iulii 2008 (UTC)Reply
And you're right about "tunnel", I think. This is the proper word. The exotic rabbit was named thus by the Romans only because it built tunnels. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 07:37, 16 Iulii 2008 (UTC)Reply
Revertere ad "Cuniculus Hvalfjordensis".
