Disputatio:Collegium Franklinianum et Marshallianum

Latest comment: abhinc 15 annos by IacobusAmor

Given the nature of the name (Merely Franklin and Marshall, as opposed to Franklin's and Marshall's) perhaps Collegium Franklinianum et Marshallianum would be more appropriate? I really am not sure, and theres not really a precedent off which to work. What say you, defensores liberae encyclopaediae? CeleritasSoni 01:18, 7 Septembris 2009 (UTC)Reply

You are our local expert, it seems. Most long-established colleges and universities have official Latin names, and nearly always we adopt those. The easiest sources are usually (a) somebody's degree certificate, (b) a current or historical seal of the institution, (c) an official history. Help in finding b or c, or in producing the answer by other means, might well be given by a friendly librarian ... Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 08:52, 7 Septembris 2009 (UTC)Reply
I checked the historical section of the college's website, but no seal or other Latinity turned up; so as you say, someone on the spot, who could consult the college's archives, might be in the best position to find out. IacobusAmor 12:34, 7 Septembris 2009 (UTC)Reply
Riiiiggghhhtt, I have the ability and responsiibility to do empirical research now. I sent off an email to a few people today and they will get back to me soon. Should nothing come up, I am going with Collegium Franklinianum et Marshallianum, as neither of the schools when first formed were actually founded by either man, but named after. But we'll see what Im told first. CeleritasSoni 17:37, 7 Septembris 2009 (UTC)Reply
From the Archivist Michael Laer at the F&M library "Between 1912 and 1916 the College started using the name "Collegium Franklinianum et Marshallianum" which appears on examples of diplomas that we have dating from 1916 to the 1930s. We don't have any more recent examples in our collection. This may be as close as we may be able to find, as far as the "official" Latin name of the College.", confirming my second thoughts. As such I have moved the article and replaced the errors with the correct name in the article. CeleritasSoni 20:34, 8 Septembris 2009 (UTC)Reply
