Cartularium[1] nominis sive copiarium[2] vel etiam diplomatarium[3] est fons scientiae historicae, quod exempla syngrapharum medii aevi vel aevi moderni incipientis amplectitur. Cartularium antiquissimum, quod exstat, saeculo 9 Rhenaniae conscriptum est. Cartularia usque ad saeculum 18 confecta sunt.[4]

Cartularium ab illo, qui syngraphas accepit, confectum est, ne exemplaria prima (ut puta usu frequenti) aliquid detrimenti caperent vel iniuriis temporum interirent. Praeterea brevis synopsis administrationem adiuvit. Cartularia saepe et a notariis fide confirmata sunt.
