You mean ''... was ich dir gestern versprochen hatte.''? I personally would use the first form and would avoid the second one because of its formality. I know that there is this difference between completed and not completed actions, however, if someone promises something, isn't it relevant if he will do (in the future) what he has (had?) promised?
