I didn't want to go off at a tangent there, but your comment on seals struck me as odd. Isn't that exactly what a seal does? Admittedly names are abbreviated on seals, sometimes, as also on coins, but I can't think of any reason for rejecting the evidence of a seal as "not official". In this particular very unusual case, my guess would be that both universities inherited the already-fixed Latin name and neither of them cared to change it.
