::That's a good question. I probably would have considered that wrong if someone else wrote it here, but I didn't even think about it in this case. Perhaps it's an aorist vs. perfect distinction? I.e. he's talking about the moment of discovery, not the duration of it's discoveredness. Or maybe it's just a mistake.
