Descriptio

(St Mary and St Barlok).brass monument in chancel floor,to Sir w:Anthony Fitzherbert,d.1538, and wife (dubious, this brass is of earlier date, his first wife Dorothy Willoughby died without issue, so the lady here named "Dame Dorothy" surrounded by children is unlikely to be Dorothy Willoughby, and the armorials do not indicate that. Inscription below: "Dorothy & Dame Dorothy, Elizabethe Alys & Katheryn". Detail in church in Norbury, Derbyshire. This lady seems to be a daughter of FitzHerbert, and a wife of a man whose arms were: Paly of six, overall a bend, as the heraldry on her mantle indicates. The foremost standing lady ("Dame Dorothy") wears a mantle on either side of which are shown the following arms:

  • Dexter (viewer's left): Paly of six, overall a bend (the position usually reserved for the husband's arms)
  • Sinister (viewer's right): Gules, three lions rampant or (FitHerbert of Tissington) quartering: Argent, a chief vairy gules and or overall a bend sable (FitzHerbert of Swynnerton).
