Икона относится к типу изображения исторических лиц, причисленных к святым. Григорий Палама – монах-мистик и архиепископ Фессалоник, глава духовного движения исихазма, был канонизирован в 1368 году. На иконе он представлен в традиционной фронтальной позе. В левой руке Палама держит книгу, правой благословляет. На нем красная епископская фелонь, украшенная крестами в круге, на плечах – омофор с крестами.

Палама получил хорошее философское образование, превосходно знал труды Аристотеля и Платона, в молодости был связан с образованными светскими кругами Константинополя. Позднее, в возрасте 22 лет обратился к мистике и в 1338 г. выступил в защиту исихазма. Главными пунктами этого учения были отрицание возможностей научного познания истины, ибо она познаваема только путем единения с Богом, которое возможно при особом напряжении воли и божественной благодати.

Отточенные иконописные приемы, сочетание в письме ликов сплавленной поверхности и тонкой сети штриховидных светов – черты стиля рубежа XIV–XV веков. Суховатость и жесткость письма свидетельствуют о происхождении иконы на севере Греции.
