Object history This painting was purchased in 1979 by the National Portrait Gallery with help from The Art Fund.
Notae This is the preliminary design of the final much larger painting which was exhibited as a patriotic painting at Vauxhaull Gardens in 1762 during the Seven Years' War with France. The final painting is now lost. Hayman had never been to India, which might account for the discrepancies and awkwardness of appearances and poses of the elephant and the subjects.
