Just as the new name of the Pope recalls those of his two immediate predecessors, it can also be said that his coat of arms contains something of each of them. From Pope John, by the simple fact of having succeeded him in Venice, he has inherited the upper part of the coat of arms. In this case, the patriarchal shield of the seat of San Marcos: a winged lion in a silver field that has an open book between its claws, with this legend: "Pax tibi, Marce, Evangelista." Under the Venetian lion appears the Pope's own shield which, playing with the name (Luciani) derived from the Latin word "lux", consists mainly of three five-pointed stars in a blue field. But it is added - and here the memory of Pope Montini appears - the "mountain of six peaks to the Italian way, leaving the base", which was one of the "motifs" of the Montinian coat of arms (note also here the play on words: monti , montini). The mountain of six peaks, which is accompanied, in the shield of Pope John Paul I, with three stars, was in that of Pope Paul VI accompanied by three lilies, another very frequent "motif" in heraldry. Who knows, on the other hand, if Pope Luciani wanted to also remember the mountains of his native town? ... If we want to conclude with a somewhat daring interpretation, let us say that the new Pope, arrived at the foot of the mountain of his pontificate and, in his humility, a little uncertain about his strength, he lifts his eyes and discovers over the mountains, like the Magi, a splendid starlight that illuminates him and gives him good hope to reach the top. And this applies, deep down, to all of us. May our life be a continuous ascension, illuminated by the light that comes from above, the light of faith, the light of Christ the Lord, the light that the teachings of His Vicar on Earth give us.
