English: Twenty one people were killed on Commercial Street in the North End when a tank of molasses ruptured and exploded. An eight foot wave of the syrupy brown liquid moved down Commercial Street at a speed of 35mph. Wreckage of the collapsed tank visible in background, center, next to light colored warehouse. Elevated railway structure visible at far left and the North End Park bathing beach to the far right. A "before" view of the disaster can be seen in this image.
Français : Vingt-et-une personnes furent tuées dans la rue Commercial Street du quartier North End suite à la rupture d'un réservoir industriel de mélasse. Après l'explosion du réservoir, une vague de liquide sirupeux brun, haute de huit pieds (2,5m), déferla vers le bas de Commercial Street à une vitesse de 35 mph (56 km/h). Les décombres du réservoir effondré sont visibles à l'arrière-plan, au centre, à côté de l'entrepôt de couleur claire. L'infrastructure du chemin de fer est visible à l'extrême gauche de la photo et la plage de North End Park à l'extrême droite.
