Disputatio Formulae:Fossil range
I am redesigning the plant/animal taxobox. On many pages this includes a section "Palaeontologia" whose main feature is a coloured timeline. It has always been there (originally transferred from en:wiki by Secundus Zephyrus), originally near the top of the taxobox, now in a collapsing section at the bottom.
I have never "read" this timeline through all the years I saw it in the taxobox, but having studied the construction of it I do at last understand it. Do others ever "read" it? If so, it would be worth trying to update it; if not, maybe not.
It depends on conventional colours and single-letter abbreviations for the names of the geological periods. How many readers know the colours or can interpret the single-letter abbreviations?
If it is worth updating this timeline, one essential thing is to include links to the correct Latin names of the geological periods. At the time when it was designed, no one had found those Latin names. So all the pages have had to be moved. If the links are corrected, the colours on the timeline will be properly visible again ... But I don't understand the structure of this formula and I can't find where to insert the correct names. Can anyone help with that? Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 18:39, 4 Octobris 2019 (UTC)
