Carcharodon carcharias est species selachimorphorum familiae Lamnidarum, sola species quae exstat generis Carcharodontis. Piscis valde magnus est; feminae adultae ad longitudinem 6.1 metrorum et pondus 1950 chiliogrammorum crescere possunt,[3] sed plurimi carcharodontes sunt minores, maribus inter 3.35 et 3.96 metra, feminis inter 4.57 et 4.88 metra longis.[4]
