Object history
Deutsch: This coat of arms was approved as the official insigina of District Oberhasli in 1944. In 1946, the district arms were also adopted by the district capital, Meiringen.

The blazon was approved by the Kantonale Wappenkommission, which had been convened by the canton's Executive Council in 1943 with a brief of standardising the canton's public heraldry. The Commission reported on its findings in 1946, but the publication in book form was delayed until 1981, when the Wappenbuch des Kantons Bern finally appeared. The book features coats of arms created by the graphic designer Hans Jenni.

The heraldic device as such dates back to at least the 17th century (representation with crown in Wappenscheibe ca. 1680). The use of "or, eagle sable" is based on the imperial banner by Oberhasli to represent its imperial immediacy from at least the later 13th century. The eagle (without crown) was also used in the seal of Landschaft Hasle from 1296.

The use of the crowned eagle can be traced to the late 15th century in the banner of Oberhasli, preserved in Haslimuseum Meiringen. Here, a Swiss cross is applied above the crown, but is not represented as part of the crown.
