MWCD connects English cockle with Latin conchylia, which it says is pl. of conchylium, from Greek. Add it in? IacobusAmor 18:00, 6 Septembris 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, perhaps. I wish I had one of Jacques André's books on the identification of species mentioned in ancient sources. I only have Dalby's A to Z, which is a fantastic work, but of a much more limited scope. For this reason, my list of species known to the ancients is probably short a number of names, and when we discover other names, I am wary of trusting identifications given in non-specialist sources. Judging by the L&S (even taking into account that lexicon's terrible record when it comes to identifying species), conchylium was a fairly broad term. --Iustinus 19:04, 6 Septembris 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ooh, just found an article in Dalby that I had previously missed, which gives a number of clams. But I just ran out of time to type it up, so it will have to wait til later. --Iustinus 19:24, 6 Septembris 2006 (UTC)Reply
