Bythitidae sunt familia piscium viviparorum ordinis Ophidiiformium, qui in tropicis et subtropicis maris aquis omnem per orbem terrarum endemici sunt. Bythitidae sunt pisces parvi, circa 5 centimetra longi, qui prope superficiem et circa scopulos curalii habitant.[2] Nonnullae autem species in aqua dulci habitant; exempli gratia, Ogilbia pearsei in speluncis et foraminibus lapsis in Iucatania paeninsula Mexici inveniuntur.

Post 2002, plus quam 110 species novae familiae additae sunt.[3] Anno 2005, viginti sex species novae in uno commentario ab ichthyologis Danicis et Germanis,[4] et anno 2007, octo genera nova cum viginti speciebus in alio commentario ab eisdem hominibus descriptae sunt.[5]
